Enhance your property’s beauty and longevity with professional deck and fence staining or painting.
Not only does it elevate the overall appearance, but it also provides essential protection against aging, rot, and weather damage. For optimal preservation and visual appeal, it’s recommended to stain or paint your deck and fence every two to three years.
Cleaning:
If you're planning to use semi-transparent or transparent stains, it's essential to clean the wood thoroughly. Products containing oxalic acid—such as Zep Wood Concentrated Cleaner or Behr Premium All-In-One Wood Cleaner—are highly recommended. Oxalic acid effectively removes rust, stains, and the grey discoloration caused by weathering and age.
Power Washing:
Power washing is strongly recommended to eliminate the greyish tone, stubborn mildew, dirt, and mould. It is especially useful when the deck or fence has peeling or flaking paint, as it helps strip away the loose layers.
Sanding:
Once the surface has dried after power washing, sanding is advised—particularly for previously painted decks with areas of flaking paint.
Stain Compatibility:
It's generally easier to apply a solid stain over a semi-transparent one. However, if you want to switch from solid to semi-transparent, the old finish must be completely stripped or sanded off for proper adhesion and appearance.

New Decks and Fences
Staining Guidelines:
New wooden decks should receive two coats of stain. Wooden fences, on the other hand, can be finished with either stain or paint. Ideally, all new wood surfaces should dry out for at least 30 days before any finish is applied. However, if the wood is already dry, staining can begin immediately after construction. For best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before applying any product.
Keep in mind that these are general recommendations; drying times can vary based on climate. For example, wood in dry, arid regions will cure faster than in moist, humid environments.
Sherwin-Williams’ Recommended Process for New Decks:
PREP: Wait 2–4 weeks after building. Remove leaves and debris.
WATER DROP TEST: Deck is ready when water droplets are absorbed rather than beading.
STAINING: Apply an even coat along the wood grain and work it in with a brush. Wait 4 hours between coats.
CURE TIME: Allow 24–48 hours before using the deck.
MAINTENANCE: Reapply stain every 12–48 months to maintain a fresh look.
